A transport direction indicator is always connected to a reference plane, e.g. a planar structure such as a secondary planar fabric or the Earth's surface. If the transport direction indicator itself is not a linear structure (e.g. a roche moutonnée), a linear element (e.g. a stretching lineation) is also needed as reference axis. - In the imaginary plane perpendicular to the reference surface and parallel to the reference axis, a transport direction indicator is either asymmetric or has a monoclinic symmetry. - Suitable transport direction indicators (1) are reasonably common; (2) yield a high potential of preservation over geological time periods; (3) are unequivocally recognised and measured; and (4) are capable of unique or at least statistical interpretation. - The observation of a single transport direction indicator only yields information on local transport directions that can deviate from regional transport regimes. Thus for information on a regional scale, it is necessary to collect information from a larger area.
