The Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS, FGDC-STD-018-2012) ) is a collection of terms and and definitions (units) for classifying and describing aquatic environments. Units are organized in a framework of thematic, interrelated, semi-hierarchical components and settings designed for analyzing and mapping observational data within geographic information systems (GIS).
